What is Texthog?

Texthog is a super simple service to track your budgets and expenses online. We believe that the easiest way to keep track of what you spend, is to record it in real-time.

How does it work?

Every user is provided with a unique texthog email address. As transactions are sent to this email address, they are parsed by texthog fairies and recorded in your texthog account.

How do I send a text message to an email address?

The simple answer is to give it a try. If you're able to find the @ key it should work. Most carriers support some method of sending an email via text message.

Am I limited to only using text messages?

No. Texthog was designed with an open method in mind for posting transactions to your account. In lue of sms, you can also post transactions via email, or by logging into your account and entering it manually.

Which carriers support texthog?

Most carriers support our methods. To date we have successfully tested on several handsets with ATT, Sprint, Verizon, and T-mobile.

What format should I use when posting transactions?

Via sms or email, separate tags by commas and a colon when we generally prescribe the following format: office max, $24.72

What if I forget to add a transaction right away?

No worries, you can add transactions whenever you want. If you need to adjust dates, simply log in to your account, visit the transactions screen, edit the transaction in question and set the record straight.

Can I send multiple transactions at a time?

Yes, however it only works via email, not sms. In order to send multiple transactions, you will have to use an email client. The format is one transaction per line.

Do I have to give up my privacy to use Texthog?

Absolutely not. Unlike other personal finance software, texthog does not require you to store sensitive information like bank account numbers, and credit card accounts and passwords. What are tags?

Tags are smart little descriptions about your purchases. Use tags to represent places, or specifics about what you buy. For example, if going out to eat, you might tag your transaction lunch, chipotle - Keep in mind that you can generate expense reports on specific tags.

What are categories?

Categories are like tags in that they help describe your purchases. However, categories are helpful in grouping and organizing similar types of transactions. We use 12 common IRS approved categories including: Auto/Transportation, Bills/Utilities, Business, Education, Entertainment, Food/Dining, Gifts, Home, Personal Care, Shopping, Taxes, Travel.

What are reports?

Reports are... well, reports. Generate reports to find out specifics, like say, how much money you've spent on gas in the past 34 days, or to do things like track general spending month-by-month over the course of the year.

Can I export my transactions for use with other financial software?

Yes. Our data plays well with others. Export for Excel, Quickbooks, Quicken, MS Money, CSV or PDF.

What are reminders?

If you need a friendly nudge every month so you don't forget to pay certain bill, you're not alone. You can set as many reminders as you need to, and set them to occur once, or as often as necessary.

Can I use Texthog to manage budgets?

Absolutely. Setting up a custom budget is easy. Set monthly budgets for certain categories.

Can I search for specific transactions?

Our search works as a filter. If you search for "coffee" Texthog will filter out all of your transactions tagged with "coffee" To get more precise results, select a time frame from the dropdown.

Under Spending Reports, It says "Insufficient data, please categorize our transactions." What does this mean?

Texthog spending reports are generated based on the categories you assign to your transactions. If you see this message, you'll probably want to go over your transactions and make sure you've assigned categories to them.
